Title: Testing a natural capital approach on SNH land
Client: Scottish Natural Heritage
Service area(s): natural capital accounting
About the project:
We worked with SNH to test natural capital accounting approach for the land they own or substantially manage as National Nature Reserves. The natural capital balance sheet includes the following benefits: food, energy, carbon sequestration, air quality, physical health, recreation & tourism, education & volunteering and wildlife.
The annual benefits are estimated at £28 million which is a conservative estimate as many benefits (such as flood risk management) are not covered.
But even this conservative estimate shows that the benefits are 8 times the "cost" of maintenance. In fact, we should really call this “investment” in maintenance.
