training and support

Preparing bespoke courses on economics, policy and accounting and supporting our clients through coaching

We offer training and support as part of our project delivery such as technical workshops for our clients and engagement events with their internal or external stakeholders. Such support could be during the project, as part of the design and delivery, or at the end for disseminating the findings.

As part of our natural capital accounting service, we also coach our clients so that their in-house teams can lead on preparing the accounts, enabling them to repeat the process without external help in the future. We see repeat accounts through these clients, such as Forestry England, Northumberland Water and United Utilities.

We also prepare bespoke training courses for cost benefit analysis, economic valuation, REACH legislation, Environmental Liabilities Directive and more general introduction to environmental economics.

What training services are available?

We offer a range of training options, both online and in-person, such as:

One-off events: Walkthroughs of analysis and results for project teams and broader audiences, or introductory sessions on specific topics (e.g., an overview of the natural capital approach).

Multi-day courses: Short courses providing comprehensive overviews and deep dives into areas of environmental economics such as key concepts, economic valuation methods, cost benefit analysis, and practical applications. These courses often feature in-session exercises and take-home assignments to improve learning.

Coaching: Personalized one-on-one sessions conducted throughout a project, aimed at capacity building and knowledge sharing (e.g., supporting the development of a natural capital account).

Here are some examples of the bespoke in-person and online training sessions we've crafted:

  • Finance and Environment Ministry officials in Commonwealth countries through a workshop series on economic valuation and appraisal organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat

  • Economic valuation and appraisal training workshops for economists from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Environment Agency, Joint Nature Conservation Committee Marine Team, Natural England, Health and Safety Executive and Forestry Commission and UK water company investment planners

  • Introduction to environmental economics for the project appraisal teams at the European Investment Bank, economists and other scientists at the Mexican Ministry of Environment and various under- and postgraduate courses

  • Workshops on the use of socio-economic analysis for REACH Authorisation and Restrictions to the chemicals industry

  • Environmental Economics course  that is open to all provided with CIWEM and EPC - This course covers 8 modules focusing on the concepts and applications of environmental economics.

We've authored various guidance documents and publications for national and international agencies on appraisal, economic valuation, and natural capital approach. During project execution, we routinely arrange stakeholder workshops and develop briefing notes, journal articles, and presentations.
